The Day is Done But I'm Having Fun: Nirvana & EB
There are two things in my life that are really special to me: music by Kurt Cobain/Nirvana and the game Earthbound. For those of you who don't know, Kurt Cobain was the singer/songerwriter of the early 90's Seattle grunge band Nirvana. In most people's mind, they are both dead. Kurt the person is dead, without a doubt. However, Kurt Cobain and Nirvana's influence on modern music will never die. Who is to say what is dead and who is still alive anyway? I'm still alive. How do people die? When people give up the chance to contribute to the world before it is too late. It works the exact same way with Earthbound. Just as Nirvana seemed to be "just another punk band", Earthbound was thought to be "just another Nintendo game." However Earthbound is something deeper then "just a game." I read an article a while ago that said something to the extent, "Eat, sleep, and breath Earthbound." I really like that. I can't think of a better way to say it. I show my love for Earthbound in my personality, my breath.
Lufia: And the Fortress of Doom is one of my all time favorite games next to Earthbound. Heck, if this wasn't an Earthbound site, chances are I would be writing about Lufia. Lufia to me is a lot like Guns N Roses. I love both dearly. However, it just doesn't have that "eat, sleep, breath Earthbound/Nirvana" to it. People talk a lot about Korn now. Oh, exuse me, it is "KoRn". Can't forget that capital R. KoRn is a lot like Final Fantasy VIII, it represents a new generation. A generation that only cares about image. Image, Pokemon, and KoRn.
As hard as it is to accept, Nirvana and Earthbound will never be as popular as it once was, if you can say Earthbound was ever popular. I guess the main difference between the two was that Nirvana was very well accepted, while Earthbound never hit the mainstream. Who is to say what has hit the mainstream and what hasn't? Even though Earthbound the game never was popular, Earthbound the influence on modern gaming, was and always will be. So listen to your KoRn! Play your Pokemon RPGs! I'm just stuck in the past, and I hope it will stay that way.
