The Newbie, The Bash and The Forum
If there's one thing i hold in the highest revel, its the sm.net gathering. However, my awe is based purely on rumor. I've never actually read the famed piece. This isn't because the opportunity never came up. I even remember one night Falcon24 tried to dcc me the .html version at least 6 times. The thing that keeps me away is fear.
Fear of the realization of what good times you all had, and that you never want them again. I'm writing this article to one or two particular people, but i think you all could stand a listen.
I remember hearing about a certain pact, where some of the members of the original gathering said that they would never post on another. Now those who post on the sm.net bash (specifacally NOT called the gathering in any way, shape, or form), who were in the pact, are only considered pandering to the people, and traitors. It hurts me to think of how that goes against the friendship, one of the greatest values in Earthbound. 4 friends, sticking it out, through thick and thin. Even when hard times came, they had each other. I'm sure if ness, paula, Jeff and Poo could do it again, they wouldn't be afraid.
People post on these revivals because they want to relive the best times they ever had. The true potential can only be realized if grudges are laid down, and the rush feelings of the early sm.net are remembered.
If you think the problem is lamerism, think again. The post of a lamer can be deleted at the touch of a button, so that can't be the problem. The problem is letting go. We can have better times, if we don't let the "what ifs" get us down. And how do you think the newbies feel?
Like it or not, we were all newbies. I'm a newbie, Falcon's a newbie, goc is a newbie, tengu is a newbie; we all did something for the first time. The complete distrust you hold for those without a past is appalling, that they would never amount to anything, and never will. These people CAN write, draw, sing dance, just like you can. If given a chance, they can shine.
In conclusion, i would just like to say it is ok to remember the past. They may have been better times; most people say they were. I'm sure it hurts you all to remember them, but acceptance is the key to recovery. If even one of you, oh fabled staffers and regulars of old, sat down and thought about it, what would your persona from last year be saying about you? Chances are, they would not be happy. Courage, Wisdom, and Friendship. With these values, you can do anything.
