The Illusion of Safety Finally Shattered
Throughout EarthBound, there are many commonly known places, such as towns, where players are relaxed and feel a good deal better knowing that enemies do not linger about. However, startling new evidence suggests to players that no place is truly safe and free of danger in EarthBound and if one intends to keep oneself alive they must proceed slowly and carefully even in the short distance down the street to the neighborhood drug store.
Yes, such a terrifying claim is shocking, but true. A new type of enemy, subtle yet deadly, is the Mole Playing Rough. Although usually encountered first in the caves leading to Lilliput Steps, sources indicate the seemingly harmless and "run-of-the-mill" enemy has been found meandering elsewhere; in many places where no other enemy would dare to set foot. Does this prove the Mole Playing Rough's daredevil courage and stalwart bravery? Does it reflect his sense of adventure and overwhelming confidence? Probably not. Should you choose to test the Mole Playing Rough's mettle and approach it holding so much as a popsicle stick, they will usually waste no time in running away from you and waiting for you to creep up behind them and smash their skull in. The only cases of Mole Playing Roughs attacking players following the encounters in Lillput Steps involve only a blind dash towards the foe, consequently followed by their head being smashed in. It is all too sad.
Although the actual danger of being killed by a Mole Playing Rough is ridiculously low, they are an ever-present threat to your illusion of safety. Recent spottings of the Mole have occured nearby the Drug Store in the Dusty Dunes Desert, along the shores of Summers, and on the northern region of the Deep Darkness. However, we must ask ourselves, what are the true intentions of these Moles? Are they covert kamikaze spies of a higher power? Or are they only Moles lost or isolated from their original homes? Have these moles spread to even more locations than we are aware of? Have they infested cities and towns, planning a massive global assault? Are the infrequent sightings only a foreshadowing of the insurmountable number of Mole Playing Roughs that lie in waiting? And if so, shouldn't we be prepared?
