The Time is Now
The year was 1995. I had gotten a copy of EarthBound for Christmas. I started the one game file that would lead me in my experiences. Immediately I knew that this was going to be my favourite game. But little did I know that it would lead me to where I am today.
The year was 2000. After a long span of time without playing the game, I decided to pick up the controller. I left off in Winters, the part that I could never conquer. Within days I finished the game. Being the first time that I ever completed EarthBound, I rejoiced happily.
The year was 2001. I introduced myself to the internet, and thought, “wouldn’t it be cool to make my own EarthBound game?” A series of searches led me to what began my voyage through PK Hack. I still remember the early PK Hack apps and the DOS sprite editor.
The year was 2002. I found out that PK Hack was part of a site called Starmen.net, and that there was a vast and steadily growing community of fans with equal love for the game that I had. I signed up for the forums, got on IRC, and was on my way.
The year was 2004. By this time, I was a regular at this awesome site, Starmen.Net. I was sitting in my regular IRC terminal when I was suggested, “why not play through EarthBound one more time?” It was that very day that I began a long and horribly, horribly nerdy quest that was later to be known as JeffMan’s 1/128 Item Journey.
The year was 2005. A school year had gone by, my item journey long put behind me. But, one Sunday afternoon, I picked that grey controller back up. Within 8 minutes I had acquired the latest item on my journey, and was back on my feet.
The time is now. All these experiences and times I have shared with the many commuters of this awesome site, Starmen.net. I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without support from the best of the best.
What makes this site so awesome? Well, take some time to think. The hard-working volunteer staffers who put time, effort, and money into making this a better place. The regular commuters who also put time, effort, and money into making this a better place. Artists, designers, musicians, programmers, PK Hackers, there’s just so much to do, and so many different people. It should be a time where every single contribution to the site is appreciated, no matter how big or small. This site, community, gathering, whatever you want to call it, is only going to get better. And only with the help of you, the regulars at Starmen.net, can it develop.
What can you do to make it better? Simply get out a pencil and paper and make a drawing. You can crack out that recorder and blast a few tunes. Or you can muster your computer skills and create an EarthBound hack. But the point is, no matter what your talent is, you can put it to good use and help this awesome site, Starmen.net.
And who knows. Maybe one day you’ll pick up that controller and play some good ol’ EarthBound, the game that started it all.
