The Distant Time Theory
As we all know, Mother 1 took place in the early 1900's (I forget the exact year, feel free to edit it accordingly), and Mother 2 takes place in 1988. This is roughly ninety years apart, meaning nintent (being 12 at the time) is most likely dead. This is my theory on the whole Giegue/Giygas debate, as well as where Mother 3 actually takes place.
In Mother 1/Earthbound 0, Ninten defeats Giegue through the song Eight Melodies after Giegue takes Ninten onto his ship. The song itself, being a song of love and joy, brings Giegue to the breaking point. Giegue calls off the invasion and returns to space where, most likely, he is shunned by his people. This much we know for fact. Mother 1 can, in a sense, be seen as the prequal to Mother 2, and Mother 2 can be seen as the Present Day.
In Mother 2/Earthbound 1, Giygas is defeated by Paula's praying. Praying, as we know, is the hope of humans, and can be seen as extreme emotion. After Pokey becomes corrupted and evil, he travels back in time to find the defeated Giegue. Pokey can tell that Giegue is immensly powerful and siezes the opporitunity. Pokey confronts him asking "What is it you want most?" Giegue manages out, "...friends..."
Pokey convinces Giegue that he is his friend, and that he will find friendship inside of the Devil's Machine. Let's review something, shall we? Throughout the game, you are told that Pokey is a liar, he lies about nearly everything. Throughout the game, he tells you that Giygas is, basically, the most powerful, evil being in the universe. If both of these statements are true, that would be a contradiction, so we can assume that Giygas is not actualy evil at all.
Now, we move on to the line that Giygas says. Normally thought as "rape lines" or "child lines," Giygas' text is all too perfect for my theory. "Well, Gyiyg, what may that be?" you're probably wondering. Giygas' text is actually his final thoughts before being consumed by the Devil's Machine. He knows Ness' name because he could hear Pokey talking through the "window," as I'll call it, of the machine, however, the face on the "window" does not belong to Ness... It belongs to Ninten! This is the only plausible way that Giygas could have known that sort of face, seeing as they were in robots when they confronted him. This also disproves the Fetus theory.
So, over all, Giegue was not evil, he was confused, depressed, and tricked by Pokey.
This is what I've found to be rock solid, the following is a sort of theory on how Claus became so powerful, as well as when exactly it took place.
We know that Claus and Lucas look nothing like Ness and Ninten, so we can assume that they cannot be related, or, atleast not immediate family. Ninten's grandfather, George Winters, is the one who brought the power of PSI to earth, so it would be impossible for Mother 3 to have taken place before Ninten. This means that the only possible time period for Mother 3 to take place is in the distant future, say, 200 or so years.
Pokey is still alive because he is immortal now, and he has spent his life working on a portable, more stable version of the Devil's Machine. It is eventually finished and they begin the invasion of Earth, which in this time period has undergone a massive change. It had, at one point, been destroyed, and a new world began from the rubble. This explains why even though the Pork Army is supperiorly armed, Earth is still in such a low-tech time, and seeing as how we already established that it must be in the future, this is the only probable course.
After the invasion begins, they find Claus' body, still coursing with PSI. He is fitted with the portable Devil's Machine, which is made in the form of a mask, and it is succesful. Instead of causing another Giygas, his powers are amplified, and was designed to keep him from any emotion. Although it worked amazingly, it still wasn't able to overcome the power of human emotion, and ultimately caused Claus to kill himself.
