The Dolphins of Lake Tess
No, it's not some secret that you missed playing through EarthBound all 18 times. However, it may hold the key to EarthBound's future.
Let's start from the beginning. As you may or may not know, Nintendo's "next-generation" console, designed to compete with the Playstation 2, is code-named Project Dolphin. I don't know much about it, but it was relieving to find out about a new project after learning the 64DD's ominous fate. What does this have to do with EarthBound, you ask? Well, if you'll remember, one of the 64DD's flagship games was supposed to be EarthBound 64.
And then we learned that the chance of an American 64DD was similar to the chances of a Hades snowball. Which meant, EB64 was moving to cartridge! Or so we thought. EB64 was one of the first announced games for the Nintendo 64, but we've seen no sign of it unless you count "future" under Pak Watch for how many months? EarthBound fans felt rejected and angry.
But now we see the glorious beacon of light that is Project Dolphin, that may be N2000! The 64DD crashing, the EB64 cartridge move, and the information about Project Dolphin were all within a few months. Is Nintendo trying to tell us something? Will there be no EB64, but a greater incarnation of Mother 3 on a greater platform? Sure, we got Ness in Super Smash Bros., but other than that, are loyal fans of EarthBound like us restricted to 16-bit forever? We'll just have to wait and see. Let's hope it's not long.
