Will We Change?
I haven't been here for too long, I just registered about a month ago. I remember the first time I saw the site. I thought, "Wow, there are other people in the world who love this game as much as I do!" I have seen several petitions, the first one I saw was the "Mother on Gameboy Color" petition.
We all have been there, and we have done what we could for the site. I write articles every now and then, I think of that as my contribution. Some like Giovanni donate to keep SM.net alive, some know obscure facts about Earthbound, and some are really good at keeping the art department alive. Tomato and Reid are 2 awesome people. They kept us going during the rough spots.
Over the years we have heard murmurs about Mother 3/Earthbound 2 coming out. Just recently Games are Fun released a juicy bit of information about all three Earthbound games. Remakes of the first two, and the release of the greatly anticipated Mother 3. We all know what happened with the original plan with Earthbound 64. That's why we have petitioned, right?
What if Mother 3 does get released? How will that effect our community? Well, I know that Mato and Reid are pretty stressed giving a lot of their time to the site. You cant give your life up for a site, but they give all that they can give, and that's why we have stuck around. I think that if Mother 3 is released, not only will we be flooded with n00bs, but there is so much more content that needs to be covered. More screenshots, more walkthroughs, and a host of other things.
The massive amount of new content that will need to be covered will cost even more to supply it with bandwidth. People do donate money, Giovanni is a fine example, donating $3000+ to the site. Many people donate just to get a shiny badge or an avatar, but is that the only reason? Grandpa gave his up due to the "selling out."
Can we financially support the site? I think we can. I would help keep the community alive in a heartbeat. This is the example of what a fan-site should be. We are organized, we are grammatically correct, and our forums = the bomb. I think that with the support of the regulars SM.net will persevere. We will have to be nice to the up-and -coming n00bs, and maybe the head honchos might have to add more to the staff, but if thats what we have to do, then I guess we will put our noses to the grindstone and do it.
All in all, I want to see this site go on until the end. Many people have put much time, money, blood, sweat, and tears into making this a success. It has worked too. You cant tell me that this is a crappy site. Everyone working on it knows what they are doing, and they do their jobs well. Will we survive? I think so
