Get the word out
Most people who visit Starmen.net get the idea that an Earthbound sequel would be a good idea. More to the point: a GREAT idea. Excellent plot devices (complete with trademark Earthbound humor) and the power of the new systems would form into one excellent RPG. A guaranteed best seller in the RPG-barren Nintendoland.
Why are we the only ones that see this? Nintendo has been reluctant to release another Earthbound game even though there is a great concensus (at least in Japan) that one ought to come out. I figure that if enough people want a game, Nintendo will slap together a cheap substitute and get us off their backs. The problem is that not enough people on this side of the pond (that means us) know about Earthbound.
Most people only know Ness from Super Smash Brothers (and the eye-candy sequel SSB: Melee). Only the few that are bored enough (bored with SSB?) to venture into the characters screen see that Ness was from Earthbound (SNES). That is only a half truth. Ness was also in Earthbound 0 (a.k.a. Mother for the NES). If you didn't know that, don't feel bad, it was never released here in America. If you didn't know that, you are the exact audience that I am trying to target to inform you of this great game that you missed out on. If you know why Earthbound 0 didn't come out in America, where to get an emulated copy for your PC, and what you get in exchange for the contact lenses, award yourself a purple heart for enduring this drought of gaming goodness sequels and give me a hand.
So how do we get the general public informed? Mainstream media. In other words: Magazines! EGM now has an "Ever Wondered" article that answers game related questions. As Earthbound cultists (blue, blue) we should all write in and ask whatever happened to Earthbound 64. Go get a copy at the newstand and send brief questions to [email protected] with the subject "Ever Wondered?". If they choose to put that article in the magazine, more people will learn something about Earthbound than any other method (short of them putting up a full-featured article, but seriously, that will never happen... until there is another Earthbound).
Think about it. There is at least one editor that loves Earthbound (see p. 142 of issue 150, bottom of page) and the game is rife with controversy. The rumors alone kept many rumor-mongers engaged for months with the will-it or won't-it saga. Maybe Starmen.net would host another mailing event. If this doesn't work, we could always resort back to annoying Nintendo with letters until they give in. Starmen.net could do another "Seige" contests with other magazines.
This was just an idea. Please, for Earthbound's sake, send an email to EGM. If you have other ideas, I would be glad to hear them. Also, if you know anything you would like included in a sequel (plot points, characters, new PSI powers, anything and everything), please send them too. My email address is [email protected]. We must act together in order to score another peice of gaming goodness.
