EarthBound Pronunciations
Hey, Talah Rama here, for his very first article on www.earthbound.net. I would really like to clear something up, that has been bothering me for a long time... what are the real pronounciations of many areas and towns in the game?
There have been many arguments over how words words in the world of EarthBound are truly pronounced, such as: Onett, Mach (Pizza), Lilliput (Steps), Topolla (Theatre), Monotoli, Kraken, Scaraba, Lumine (Hall), Gaia (Beam)... you get the idea. All I'm trying to say, is that there are no "true" pronounciations of many words in the game of EarthBound... as far as we know. There is nobody to say, "this is the right way to pronounce Monotili or not". There is no proof that we have to actually back this up, because we have not actually heard how some of these words are meant to be said.
I'll take an arguable word, such as "Onett" -- The way that I always have pronounced this word, is "oh-net", but I have heard other people pronounce the word as, "aw-net". There have also been other words that I have noticed to rouse a debate, such as, "Scaraba" -- I have always pronounced this word as, "sk-air-ah-bah", but once again, I have noticed this word being pronounced as, "sk-air-ae-bah". At first I thought that this was very strange, but then I realized that there is no known oral form of this word. The only people that could supply this information is the creators of EarthBound, themselves.
I know that this article may not seem very important to some people, but this issue has been brought to my attention a number of times before. I am not going to announce the ways that I believe these words should be pronounced, because I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Also, the first time you see a word you are not quite sure of, you might think that it is pronounced a certain way... and I know from experience that once you get it in your head that you're right, sometimes it's difficult to change that thought, since it has stuck with you for such a long time. I know that there are some words that have had their true pronounciations and spellings clarified, such as "Gygas" and "Boskista..." or is it "ok's'ka", lol! We all know about that wierd sound when you are choosing the name that you want, and for those who don't know -- Yes! It is "ok's'ka", not "Bokista"!
I am not about to go and prove some people wrong of the correct pronounciations towards some of the words I have showed for example, because I think that they have not caused enough commotion to get all worked up about... you should be spending that time boosting up Ness' levels (and if you're looking for a real challenge, try and bring his level up to 100, hehehehehe).
