Them Young Guns!
Wow. This is a big topic, although it doesn't seem like it. I think that it is important to have younger people here at Starmen. I am sort of biased about this myself, considering that I am probably the youngest semi-regular on the site (no, I am not going to tell you my age). For me, most people that have ever noticed my existence (nobody) have never considered me as young or immature. I am not stupid, although I have met some people my age or older who are. I feel that many of the younger people on this site are either really stupid and annoying or intelligent and mature.
I think that age has a huge effect on this site. Most of the people who are older are generally more mature, but I have met some of the older members who are extremely stupid. I am unsure of where to draw the line between correlation and causation, because this can vary either way. There are some extremely mature and intellectual young people on this site, and also some frighteningly moronic elders. It's hard to say that age is just a correlation of the belief that "age has no actual effect on maturity, and the fact that most of the elders here are more mature means nothing." However, it's hard to say that it's a total causation. It's not necessarily true that the older a person is, the more mature they are, although this is generally the case.
Still, I think that it is important to have younger people on this site. With younger people on this site, we are able to have a more open perspective. Since the thought patterns of younger people are usually different from those of adults, having younger people on this site can allow the sitegoers to have a different perspective as a contrast to the beliefs of the older community. The younger people can give insight that some adults would never think of, be it reasonable or not. Sometimes, this insight can be extremely helpful, but sometimes it is just downright stupid.
So, should we keep young people on the site or not? I don't know, myself, but I think that we should. Although younger people can be stupid, there are a few gems among them. Because of some notable exceptions, I don't think that there should be an age limit on this site. If there were, I would probably be banned, and some valuable insight might be missed. This might be some very important insight, such as a small change in the coding of the site that would fix some future problem that we might have. If there was some kind of computer prodigy who was five years old who could fix the problem and no other person on the site could fix it, our site might be better.
So... in conclusion... Having younger members here would be a good idea, but we still have to be careful.
