Urfbownd Essay

At the tender age of 11, I was at my local video renting store. I went there often to indulge myself into the delightful games that were of the SNES. I often noticed the obscure looking, giant box when I browsed the selection. The box was finally too large to ignore and I caved in and shelled out the little cash I had to rent it. It was not only that, but the screenshots on the back were just so quirky and captivating. That is what really hooked me. That picture of the giant palace in the sky, it was pretty surreal at the time. I then proceeded to check the game out, and biked home as fast as my legs would take me.

When I got home and finally booted up that game, I was in for an experience I shall never forget. Before you even start the game you are already sucked into its universe. From the ominous “The War Against Giygas” message with the freaky melody to the part where you pick your favorite food and activity, you know you’re in for an epic adventure in which insanity will ensue. It was quite an incredible rush after you meet the mysterious Buzz Buzz from the future. The story he tells of the friendships and perils you will soon face and the battle you must face against a foe with unimaginable power instilled a tremendous sense of adventure in me. I could go on forever gushing about nearly every intricacy involved in this game. The plot, the characters, every single little detail in this game engrosses you into the game so much that it makes it hard to stop. I, like so many others I’m sure, didn’t even shut the game off the first time I beat it. I was so engaged in the game that I played the whole thing in my first sitting. That is truly a rarity.

For years, I jealously kept this gem to myself. Like a fool, I didn’t encourage the people I knew to play Earthbound, but I didn’t know any gamer besides me who could truly appreciate it. Fortunately that changed. I turned one of my closest gaming buddies onto the game and he was completely dumbfounded. Although it was the year 200X, he was completely astounded that he missed this title nearly 10 years ago. The game spread like wildfire through our tiny school. I swear out of the 60 students in my graduating class, at least 10 of them bought the game that year. The scariest thing is my girlfriend is a bigger fan than I am. It never ceases to amaze me how many times a year she beats that game. If you haven’t played Earthbound in a while, then you should. Just take your time, and indulge in the memories and experiences you had the first time you ever played through it. You will be pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it is. And for those of you who haven’t shared the wealth, shame on you. Spread the good word and proclaim the joys of this wonderful treasure. If you don’t, pokey will leave a surprise in your sandbox.
