Analysis of a Mayor
Anyone who’s played through Earthbound and paid attention to the text knows that B.H. Pirkle is a rotten guy. The extent of his corruption however may not be so obvious.
He does not take responsibility as mayor. He doesn’t take action to solve the city’s problems. When the animals started acting crazy he could have ordered a campaign for animal control to do a full sweep of the area and take in all the critters. He didn’t. If the Sharks started getting rowdy, Pirkle could have made a call to Chief Strong and told him to pay a “visit” to the local arcade. He didn’t. This all proves his sloth.
Now let’s discuss Mr. Mayor’s Financial fallacies. In the game we’ve had to make detours because of a roadblock problems a few times. One cop even made a comment about how Onett is famous for roadblocks. Do you know why? Because that’s what 90% of the city budget is going towards. Roadblocks! The other 10% comprises of Twinkies and Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. With this in mind, let’s look at one of the curiosities of EB. There is no school in Onett, though sometimes when you call your mom, she mentions that she talked to your teacher and got you out of trouble for missing class. This can be easily explained. To make room for roadblock funds, Pirkle made the public library second as a school. All classes are taught in the library. That would explain all the school desks. It’s clear evidence that Pirkle is abusing government funds. This proves his irresponsibility.
Another notable problem is Pirkle’s personality. All the billboards around town promote Pirkle as a proactive, friendly, and responsible person. He tries to manipulate the public while hiding his true self and agenda through propaganda. Even so, people could not ignore the fact that Pirkle was not fixing the problems with the Sharks and wild animals. No one probably did anything because they were too afraid, or they got bought off. Thus the dilemma of the city went on and nothing is done about it. Only through vigilante justice was the city saved; saved by a 13 year old boy! That’s pretty sad. This proves Pirkle’s cruelty and manipulative personality.
Does Mayor Pirkle have any redeeming qualities? None, really. Sure, he gave you the key to the shack, but a baseball bat to the forehead and some pocket fishing could have had an equivalent result. Will things ever get better for our beloved town? We’ll just have to wait and see.
