Giygas the Time Traveler
According to Buzz Buzz, Giygas destroyed the universe ten years in the future. Giygas and his followers are gathering strenght in the present. Later in the game, your characters must travel to the past in order to confront Giygas. The Phase Distorter and Dr. Andonuts state he's in the Lost Underworld, but not in the present. The given information supports my theory that Giygas understood Phase Distortion.
For some reason, I believe Giygas is capable of time travel because he eventually hid in the Cave of the Past after Ness was empowered by the Sanctuaries. After eliminating his followers' strongholds, Giygas might have resorted to hiding in the past. The prototype Starman, the Starman Junior, had an ability to travel from Buzz Buzz's future into the past in an effort to defeat Ness and Buzz Buzz. Buzz Buzz himself appeared from the meteorite, and he told Ness that he came from the future to inform him of the upcoming tasks. Given that Giygas built Starman Junior, it seems possible for him to have known about phase distortion the entire time.
Dr. Andonuts' method involves processing the character's beings prior to the temporal shift. Since organic material cannot withstand phase distortion, the Devil's Machine is Giygas' mighty chariot. With this vehicle, our nemesis transcends the space-time continuum. Additionally, Giygas' cronies used phase distortion as well.
Now, phase distortion could be attempted without zexonyte. Dr. Andonuts mentioned that our porcine friend stole the first device. Later, upon receiving the meteorite piece, the old doctor mentions that he never saw the element. The Phase Distorter obviously functioned without Zexonyte because it warped to the Lost Underworld. After that, Pokey must have destroyed it as he did to the helicopter. (Anybody remember seeing a helicopter without an engine?) From the Lost Underworld, Pokey needed a stepping stone to his final destination: The Past. Being one of his ardent supporters, it was logical for Giygas to bring Pokey into the past. Seeing that Giygas' cronies can "phase distort" it would only seem logical for both he and Pokey to do the same.
On an unrelated note, Giygas may have extracted the data from Apple Kid's and Dr. Andonut's minds when they were being held captive in Stonehenge Base. Those captivity devices may have had more than one purpose. Plus, it's common knowledge that Dr. Andonuts is rather eccentric. Knowing this foible, Giygas simply collected people his followers believed to have possessed these traits. (Look at the captives: Mr. Saturn, Apple Kid, Tony, a hippie, a Tessie Watcher, the Mr. T look-alike, and Dr. Andonuts.) If Giygas understood Andonuts' theory, he managed to devise a practical application of it, yet he failed. Failure is the condition Ness managed to acquire the information his friends needed in order to apply phase distortion.
